Five Things to Do to Complement your Ride in the Tour of the Fireflies

tofxx02

Joining the Tour of the Fireflies is already an exciting activity in itself but did you know that you can enhance and fully maximize your participation in the Tour by not only preparing your legs and your bike but also by being involved in other Firefly Brigade activities throughout the year?

Many people would think that because the Tour of the Fireflies, which started with 300 bikers way back in 1999, has become a nationwide phenomenon and has since ballooned to 15,000 happy bicyclists as of last year’s edition, that it is the only activity that the Firefly Brigade is deeply involved with. We can say though, that because it takes more than half a year to prepare, the Tour does take a lot of our energies and efforts to bring to you this premiere bike event every year since that very first Tour of the Fireflies. Click here to see the Tour throughout the years.

The Tour of the Fireflies is participated in not only by elite athletes, TV and movie personalities, and other celebrities but also, most importantly, by people who simply love to bike and indeed they do bike to work, to school, to buy groceries, to couples’ dates, to protest rallies, and just go to wherever they meant to go. These are the people who make up most of the peloton and in the great Firefly Brigade tradition, are also marshaled by bikers trained for the job.

Here then are five other activities of the Firefly Brigade where you can participate to really absorb the Firefly bicycling spirit and thus be totally happy in joining the Tour of the Fireflies.

1. Monthly Critical Mass Ride (CMR). We can call these rides “mini Tour of the Fireflies” because these themed rides reflect the vision and mission of the Fireflies as expressed in that month’s social, civil or religious event. These rides are usually held on the third Sunday of each month. Wikipedia defines the original critical mass ride as “monthly political protest rides and characterized as being part of a social movement.” For the Firefly Brigade’s version, we try to make such rides as neutral as whenever possible but still connecting and highlighting the celebration with the Firefly Brigade’s established goals.

How this activity complements the Tour of the Fireflies:

CMRs can be your way to practice riding in a group and on city streets. You can adopt our CMRs as your training venue if you want to begin biking to work. A CMR is not only a fun ride but also can provide you with practical tips on group riding, biking to work, and bike safety and maintenance. You can learn bicycling skills that you can apply not only to your preparations for the Tour but also to your daily bicycling errands. In line with this activity, you can also become one of the Firefly Brigade Marshals, which is a subject of one of our other posts.

2. Help the Firefly Brigade in campaigning for Road Sharing and Biking to Work. While there are existing campaigns and advocacies by other bike groups for the same purpose, the Firefly Brigade actively lobbies for these advocacies through the members’ own lives – we do bike to work and share the road daily, as much as possible. Our members are bike to workers and road sharers who can speak for and on behalf of similar minded bikers in the country.

How this activity complements the Tour of the Fireflies:

Road sharing and biking to work are practical applications of what you can experience in the Tour of the Fireflies. Keeping in mind the idea of road sharing helps keep bikers aware that they are not alone on the road, that they need to be alert, ready to take any needed action to avoid accidents. Sharing the road while biking to work will help all road users to travel safely and arrive at our destinations in one piece.

Road sharing and biking to work are practical applications of what you can experience in the Tour of the Fireflies...Bicycles need to be parked properly, both for safety and protection.

Promoting bike parking facilities will help highlight the fact that more people will be encouraged to bike if they see that the bikes they love are well protected from the elements as well as from bike thieves.

3. Assist the Firefly Brigade in promoting bicycle parking in commercial establishments. Having bike parking as part of a building’s infrastructure will surely boosts business as proven by those who have already installed bike parking racks in their establishments. Having bike parking racks is a showcase of business owners’ concern for the environment. It may not sound as grand as other environmental projects that big name businesses support but even a simple bike rack in front of a small eatery goes a long way to bring to the forefront our struggles to promote clean air and sustainable communities.

How this activity complements the Tour of the Fireflies:

Bicycles need to be parked properly, both for safety and protection. Promoting bike parking facilities will help highlight the fact that more people will be encouraged to bike if they see that the bikes they love are well protected from the elements as well as from bike thieves. If you help us in this advocacy, you are helping thousands of bikers have safe and secure bike parking and thus you too will benefit from your own efforts. The Tour of the Fireflies will gain not just more popularity but more credibility as well in spreading bicycling lifestyle throughout the country.

4. Provide needy bikers to work with safety gears by donating your used but not abused bike parts. From time to time, we ask our members and friends to donate used bike parts and then donate them to bikers who barely have the right personal protective gears as they bike to work, especially at night.  We accept cranks, pedals, bike lights, saddles, rims, spokes, hubs, etc., that could still be installed and used safely. In fact, we have already donated some used bikes to typhoon victims who asked us to share with them some of those that we have already collected.

How this activity complements the Tour of the Fireflies:

If you are serious in participating in the Tour, you will realize that preparing your bike is just as important as preparing yourself physically. Your machine (the bike) should be in sync with your body in order to finish the Tour. Thus, you will know the importance of having reliable bike parts that will secure your place in the finish line. Remember however, that the Tour of the Fireflies is not a race but a fun ride and part of having fun is to make sure that everyone is able to finish the Tour.

5. Become a full pledged member of the Firefly Brigade Core group. This is where all the other activities we have enumerated above come together: being given the chance to become a “Parplay” in the fullest sense of the word. We don’t usually open membership to the Firefly Brigade Core Group every year but you can always try to contact us and inquire if we are having what we call “Firefly Flight Training” which is your gateway to entering the wonderful world of the Firefly Brigade. This is where you will be called “larvae,” or a little Parplay in the making. And after your graduation from the Firefly Flight Training, the length of which depends on many factors, you will be called “Parplay” with all of its attendant full bragging rights!

How this activity complements the Tour of the Fireflies:

First of all, even as a “larvae”, you get to become part of the organizing committees formed to oversee the planning and execution of the Tour. We have several of them that contribute to its success, with each one designed to serve a particular purpose, such as the production committee which is responsible for producing materials to promote and hold the Tour on the designated day. There is also one which is tasked with providing food for all the members and volunteers not only on Tour day but all throughout the preparation and planning period, which as we have said, may take more than half of the year. What bikers actually experience on Tour day itself if the sum of all the Parplays’ efforts, sweat and tears all converging and melding on that happy day.

The Tour of the Fireflies is just one day but what we hope to last is its influence in spreading the bicycling lifestyle in the country. We have gone a long way from our small beginnings in the last century and we hope to do more during this one, with all of your help.
